Source: Dolphins, Incognito have deal

In a continued effort to strengthen its offensive line, the Miami Dolphins on Wednesday reached agreement on a one-year contract with temperamental guard Richie Incognito, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

he 26-year-old Incognito, a five-year veteran, spent his entire career with St. Louis after being drafted in the third round in 2005, but his tenure ended late last season following his second benching of the season by the Rams.

In a 40-point December loss to the Titans, Incognito drew two personal foul penalties for head-butting opponents, was benched by coach Steve Spagnuolo and watched the second half from the bench with a poncho over his head.

Incognito, who was named the dirtiest player in the NFL earlier in 2009 by The Sporting News, was later fined $50,000 by the NFL for the head butts.

Williams runs for 119 yards, 3 TDs as Dolphins top Panthers

With Ronnie Brown lost for the season, the Miami Dolphins turned to their aging running back. Ricky Williams showed he’s still got it.

The 32-year-old Williams rushed for 119 yards and scored three touchdowns, and the Dolphins beat the Carolina Panthers 24-17 on Thursday night for their fourth win in six games to get into the AFC playoff picture.

A day after learning Brown is lost for the season to a foot injury, the Dolphins (5-5) continued their surge after an 0-3 start behind Williams. The 2002 NFL rushing champion had a receiving and rushing touchdown in the same game for the first time in his career that included a couple of lost seasons.

“Coach always talks about finishing,” Williams said. “Sometimes in this league, in a physical game, it’s difficult to finish. I think in the past we’ve prided ourselves on finishing games and we did a good job tonight.”

SI poll: Joey Porter NFL’s 2nd dirtiest player

We all know Joey Porter can have a potty mouth that keeps everyone not wearing a Jets uniform entertained. But in the Sports Illustrated that hits the stands and mailboxes Wednesday, we learn Porter has a dirty reputation, also.

In a poll of 296 NFL players, Porter tied Washington’s Albert Haynesworth as the second dirtiest player in the league.

Six percent of players who responded said Porter and Haynesworth were the dirtiest. Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Hines Ward, the master of the blind side block, garnered 11.6 percent of the votes to be considered the dirtiest player in the NFL.

Miami Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder ‘dinged up’

Linebacker Channing Crowder spent Wednesday’s practice on the sidelines, doing exercises for the shoulder he injured in Sunday’s loss to New Orleans.

“Just dinged up a little bit,” Crowder said. “Shoulder’s sore, so they said to sit out and try to get back right. See what [coach] Tony [Sparano] has to say. He deals with injury stuff. I hate missing games. I wanted to practice [Wednesday,] to be honest.

“Tony had to talk me out of it.”

Though Crowder has been short on impact plays — only two forced fumbles, one fumble recovered and zero interceptions since the start of the 2006 season — his impact on a defense is glaring when he’s gone. In the past five games he has missed, the Dolphins defense has allowed an average of 27.4 points, 168.0 rushing yards and 403.8 yards of offense.

Miami Dolphins reopen competition at wide receiver

The deck has been shuffled. Now, it’s time for the aces and the jokers to separate themselves in the most objective way possible — during practice.

In a move that could cause a considerable shake up at the wide receiver position, coach Tony Sparano sent a clear message to his corps of pass catchers Wednesday when he essentially reopened the competition for the team’s starting spots.

“Just making sure everyone is on their toes,” Sparano said.

Most notably, wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. did not work with the first- or second-team offense during the initial 30 minutes of practice that is open to the media. Those limited snaps were assigned to Davone Bess, Greg Camarillo and rookie Brian Hartline.

Miami Dolphins WR Ted Ginn must fight for his starting job

Struggling wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. has been thrown into a five-man competition for his starting job, Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said Wednesday.

Asked specifically if Ginn had been demoted to second string, Sparano initially said “no,” but then made it clear anything is possible by the time the Dolphins play the Jets on Sunday in New Jersey.

“We’ll see where we are at the end of the week,” Sparano said. “Right now I’m just trying to upset the whole apple cart and let’s so how this thing goes. I don’t want to say yes, I don’t want to say no right now.”

Ginn has been held to five receptions for 77 yards the past four games, but 53 of those yards came on one touchdown catch in the fourth quarter of the Oct. 12 home win over the Jets. Ginn had at least two more dropped passes in Sunday’s loss to New Orleans, including a bobble that was returned 42 yards for a touchdown by Saints safety Darren Sharper early in the second half.

Dolphins LB Roth rejoins practice

Miami Dolphins linebacker Matt Roth has returned to practice after missing the first five games of the season because of a groin injury.

Roth joined Wednesday’s workout in preparation for Sunday’s game against the unbeaten New Orleans Saints. It’s uncertain whether he’ll be activated this week.

Roth had been sidelined since the start of training camp and spent the first six weeks of the regular season on the reserve-non-football injury list. He returns as a reserve after losing his starting job to Jason Taylor.
