Struggling wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. has been thrown into a five-man competition for his starting job, Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said Wednesday.
Asked specifically if Ginn had been demoted to second string, Sparano initially said “no,” but then made it clear anything is possible by the time the Dolphins play the Jets on Sunday in New Jersey.
“We’ll see where we are at the end of the week,” Sparano said. “Right now I’m just trying to upset the whole apple cart and let’s so how this thing goes. I don’t want to say yes, I don’t want to say no right now.”
Ginn has been held to five receptions for 77 yards the past four games, but 53 of those yards came on one touchdown catch in the fourth quarter of the Oct. 12 home win over the Jets. Ginn had at least two more dropped passes in Sunday’s loss to New Orleans, including a bobble that was returned 42 yards for a touchdown by Saints safety Darren Sharper early in the second half.
